Turtlehead—Flowering

Turtlehead.

The white and pink-tinged flowers of turtlehead are pollinated primarily by large bees that are strong enough to push between the “lips” of the flower and reach the nectar and pollen within. The derivation of this plant’s name becomes even more obvious when you see the movement of its “lips” as a bee moves around inside the flower. The Baltimore checkerspot butterfly frequently lays its eggs on the leaves of turtlehead, providing its larvae with a meal as they emerge.
